Frequently Asked Questions
Before You Buy

- Is a Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle a "real" dog breed?
Proclaimed as the smallest beagle breed in the world, the
Queens Beagle is recognized, registered, and shown by the
IABCA [International All Breed Canine Association].
Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles are registered as their own
breed.
Some are in the 8 to 12
lb. range as adults!
- How did the Queens Foundation create the beagle & bear?
The Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle Foundation created the
smallest new Beagle breed in the world by initially out
crossing Beagles with Miniature Dachshunds, then breeding
their offspring back to select small Beagles. Some of these
dogs can mature at 5 to 15 lbs. in teacup sizes! Toy size is
15 to 25 lbs. Their conformation improves with each
successive generation. During the process interesting coat
patterns and colors never before seen in Beagles have
become an identifiable trait of our unique breed of Beagle.
Queen Elizabeth Pocket Bear cubs have a predominant pug
and terrier multi-generation heritage. This breed has several
coat styles and are named after the variety of bear cubs they
resemble.
- 'Do' Fence me in?
All beagles enjoy being outside. While a Queen Elizabeth
Pocket Beagle is typically easier to call back from exploration
than a standard beagle. We recommend a backyard fence
and the consistent use of your leash when away from home.
- What size is a Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle?
We don't measure the size of our dogs in inches. What
determines how big your dog is how much it weighs. You can
have a long legged fine boned dog that weighs the same as a
short legged stocky dog.
Our teacup sized beagles are 5 to 15 lbs. as an adult.
Our toy sized beagles are 15 to 25 lbs. as an adult.
By comparison a standard beagle is 25 to 50 lbs. as an adult.
- How are Queens Beagles and Bears with Children?
Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles and Bears are two of the
safest dogs to have with children. They don't bite them.
They put up with abuse because they love their family. They
are tolerant of rough housing or they will leave the room.
They don't attack back.
Queen Elizabeth Pocket Foundation breeds typically have
great natures. We don't breed one that wouldn't. We give
love and attention to the babies so they have good
temperaments. They are handled often from birth and
respond early to human touch and the sound of their voice.
Most of the breeders have families and have them right in
their living rooms with them so they are used to children.
Even my biggest breeder has helpers and they still get extra
attention as puppies there in their own specially designed play
rooms.
Every opportunity to socialize your puppy is taken before it
arrives at your home. This gives them a well-rounded
temperament. They are an ideal child's dog.
In fact we recommend older puppies which have had more
time to practice their social skills within a group of adolescent
pups that 8 week old ones that are such babies. Older
puppies are less likely to be hurt by a young child and can
keep up better in play.
- Would a puppy be ok for me even though I live in an apartment?
We have placed so many puppies in apartments and the city.
I really haven't had complaints from any puppy buyers about
noise they make. Typically you won't even hear one bark.
Rarely would one chortle or yodel. Sometimes they do it to
express strong emotions of happiness or if they are
frustrated. Usually you will find it amusing if it sings.
Some people use litter boxes or puppy pads in a bathroom
area to eliminate the need to walk them outside. They have
lower exercise requirements and do not have to be walked if
they are loose in your home.
As for the dogs? They just want to be with you. If you don't
want a Queens Beagle closely at your side, try a Queen
Elizabeth Pocket Bear. Some are more independent in
nature.
- Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles & Bears maintenance
Are Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles and Bears hard to
maintain in the home?
They are easy care. They don't require bathing and grooming
actually but keep themselves very clean. You don't even
have to brush one. They are low maintenance and not big
shedders. They housebreak easily. They don't have
particular health problems.
The Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle Foundation believes we
improved on the breed, not just miniaturized it. It's what
people want today in a smaller dog. BE SURE TO SEE THE CARE SECTION.
- What are the Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle & Bears best qualities?
What are a Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle's best qualities
compared with a Standard Beagle?
Its primarily to do with size: You can pick up a pocket
beagle! Any one who has ever attempted to lug a standard
40 lb. beagle very far will appreciate this. By contrast a
teacup sized dog is light enough to tote in your shoulder bag.
You won't feel crowded by your pet when traveling in the car.
Our smallest teacups will fit under the seat of a plane. At
home, minimal cleanup is involved. No giant muddy pawprints
across your floor. They eat less and that equates to less
clean up on the lawn.
It's equally about temperament: They are more content as
indoor pets! They generally don't require more exercise
other than what they get moving around inside your home.
Less energized than a standard beagle, they are not pacing
the floor needing to run. They are typically lying on the sofa
beside you or at your feet as you work in the kitchen or at
the computer. They are very loving and bonded.
- Why does QEPB proclaim to be the only authentic 'pocket beagle' breed?
The Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle is the only 'pocket beagle' type dog to be accepted by any major registry and for International Championship status. They are the only 'pocket beagle' to be recognized by any major kennel club. We have shown our dogs in IABCA and they have earned International Championships through UCI giving the QEPB status as a TRUE rare breed dog.
